We bring good news from our 3rd Cactus Classic
tournament, we are the champions!!
Mile High played well during the tournament, and new boy Sheldon
scoring an amazing 7 goals. We are expecting big things from now
on. The first day went very well, after a 1-1 draw against a revamped
Dallas team, we beat Asean and S Devils 3-0.
The semi final finished 1-1, we started very slowly and only woke
up after they scored, Rachel scored the equalizer so the game went
to strokes. MH scored all of them apart from one, the captain gave
them a rubbish start by missing the first one but they recovered
and scored the rest and H Devils missed 2.
Mile High beat a very good team in the final 2-1. At half time it
was 0-0 and we knew our superior fitness would begin to tell, so
within 1 minute they scored. BUT with 5 minutes to go, Asif took
on 20 players down the right got to the end line, pulled it back
to Phil who flicked it with perfection into the corner - they did
just as the captain told them to do at half time. 2 minutes later
Sheldon scored the winner from a short corner, fitting that the
person to start the scoring, finish it.
MH only let in 2 goals, thanks to the defensive skills of Whit,
Garrett, Larry, Pam and Paige. We scored 10 goals, Sheldon 7, Rachel
2 and Phil 1. Assists came from everywhere, so lets mention the
rest of the team, Ashley, Amanda, Sebastien and Asif.
Team Colorado had a very hard first game, they lost 2-0 to Monarcas
who had the best women players in the tournament - their men weren't
bad either. Our second game was close but for all the attacking
they did, we just couldn't find the goal. Then on the last game
under the lights we came alive. Pankaj scored 2 amazing goals in
the 1st half thanks to some nonstop running and the tenacious skills
of Austin. Austin should have scored himself in the 2nd half when
Erin made a fool of the big bloke at the back and passed the ball
into Austin's path, and then Austin.....missed. However, moments
later he got the goal he deserved, a nice reverse stick sweep and
made it a great finish to the day.
Bright and early the next day, TC came out fighting. After a hard
fought game Austin scored with minutes to go to put us into the
5th/6th play-offs. Wanting to finish the tournament off in style,
TC started well and we knew our superior fitness would begin to
tell. Then the other team scored. But, our heads didn't drop and
Austin scored from a short corner to make it a nail biting finish.
The score stayed the same, so it went to strokes, unfortunately,
we lost 4-3.
TC scored 5 goals, Austin 3 and Pankaj 2., only conceded 4. The
TC team all played well after a slow start - Whit, Will, Danny,
Julie, Anne, John, Alison, Spencer, Kate, Erin, Austin, Panka and
Miki, who did a great job as captain.
Special thanks and mention to Whit, who was GK for both teams playing
in a massive 10 games in the hot weather.
Thanks to Miki for organizing the hotels, and thanks to Asif and
Larry for organizing the rest of it.
A great tournament again, looking forward to next year.....
Photos to appear soon.
