Congratulations to both teams who played extremely well in the ASU Cactus tournament. Mile High won the tournament and Team Colorado came 3rd. Mile High finished the first day top of group 1 with 2 wins and 1 tie. Team Colorado finished 2nd in group 2 with 2 wins and 1 loss. They scored an amazing 10 goals with Jerry’s personal total 7 of them, more than all of the teams in group 1 combined.

Unfortunately with both teams doing so well it meant they played each other in the first semi final on Sunday....it just felt like a normal Sunday morning in Denver !. Mile High had the most pressure in the first half but couldn't crack Team Colorado's excellent defense. Just before half time, Team Colorado put Jerry through and he scored with a single touch...surprise surprise! In the second half Mile High came back with a goal from Phil, but that man Jerry scored yet again from a short corner. Mile High tied the game when Sebastien scored but neither team could find the winning goal so it went to penalty strokes.
Spencer went wide - Sebastien scored. 1-0 Mile High.
Danny's was saved - Larry went wide. 1-0 Mile High.
Jerry's was saved - Garrett scored. 2-0 Mile High.
Will's was saved. Mile High win 2-0 on penalties.
The hero of the game had to be Sarah Williams who saved 3 penalties.

Team Colorado’s next game was for 3rd place. They played Monarcas (out of LA) and were out for revenge as they were beaten by them in the first game. It was looking good for Team Colorado when they were 4-2 up in the second half, again scoring quality goal after goal after goal. Jerry then let someone else have a go at scoring - Miki scored a nice goal with Pankaj making sure it went in. Monarcas were a very strong team and came back to tie the game. So again it went to penalties. This time Team Colorado scored all their penalties, trouble was so did Monarcas. So it went to sudden death. Team Colorado held their nerve and kept on scoring, then Whit saved from Monarcas to win the game. Team Colorado scored 16 goals and let in 12 and finished 3rd.

Mile High played next in the final, with a tough game against Sun Devils. Mile High beat them on the first day but Sun Devils were the probably the better team during that game, so they were looking for revenge. After watching Team Colorado win on Sudden Death Penalties Mile High were pumped up and raring to go. They took the lead early on when Phil scored (with what was actually a cross to Rachel), and kept up the pressure and scored again before half time when Asif turned in a cross by Phil. In the second half Sun Devils came out strong and scored within the first 5 minutes. Mile High defended well, kept creating chances and never looked like giving up another goal. The final whistle went and Mile High had won the second ASU Cactus Classic Field Hockey Tournament, scoring a nice plaque for the teams’ virtual clubhouse, and some t-shirts. Mile High scored 6 goals and let in 3 and finished 1st.

The whole tournament was a great success, everyone had fun on and off the field. The weather was a balmy 80 degrees and no snow to be seen..
We saw another side of Asif, he took a few shots of sugar and went a bit hyper - then came back down to earth whilst in the middle of the game!!
Jerry scored millions of goals. One of which deserves a special mention…picture this…Jerry draws it to his left, casually straightens up, then lets fly, reverse stick into the top right of the goal.
It was so nice to see Garrett and Miki again. After spending 6 months in the dark, underground in North Dakota and not playing hockey Garrett's hits were almost stoppable in the first few games. Then he got back into his rhythm and was hitting them like rockets. Miki curiously didn’t look like she was rusty, and we reckon she’s been out practicing with the polar bears and penguins that we hear live up there.
Both goal keepers; Sarah and Whit helped out other teams who didn't have a GK and played for them which meant they basically didn't stop playing. They were both outstanding especially in the penalty strokes.
Big thanks to Asif and Larry for organizing, and getting all of our collective lazy butts down there again.
Erin was amazing as Mile High captain - I am sure Danny was just as good as the captain for Team Colorado.
Thanks to the 3 women from Seattle who played for our teams.
Everyone played really well.
Everyone thought that playing indoors as a competitive league has had a positive effect on our playing.
Everyone got sunburnt.
Everyone was very achy.
Everyone had fun.
Can't wait for Vancouver.
And finally - Happy Birthday Nigel!!!!
