There are some obvious differences between field hockey and ice hockey – the most obvious of which is the name, but sometimes the differences aren’t as obvious to those of us who aren’t in the loop. What about those of us who don’t get our sports television from places like http://www.direct.tv/direct-tv/Colorado/ or the like? Well, thankfully, we have a guide detailing some of the obvious (and not so obvious) differences between the two.

1. Field of Play
Well, field hockey is played usually on a grassy field or turf and ice hockey is played in an ice rink. You run around in field hockey while you can propel yourself on the ice with skates in ice hockey.

2. Equipment
Ice hockey requires more padding while the most any field hockey player will wear is a mouth guard and shin guards. Sticks are also different shapes and sizes – the field hockey stick is curved like a cane.

3. Teams
Ice hockey has teams of up to 20 players with 6 on the ice at any one time. Field hockey has teams of 16 with up to 11 on the field at any one time.

4. Rules
Field hockey is much less physical than ice hockey when it comes to tackles and body checks.

Field Hockey like any sports has a number of benefits. The outlet it gives to all players as well as the great health benefits make it a great sports to play.

One of the benefits of playing field hockey is the number of good friends you’ll gain. Concepts like teamwork, determination, and perseverance are all admirable qualities to gain while playing the game.

Field Hockey helps with reducing overall body fat. The active being fast in short bursts then going into normal speed is great for stimulating the heart rate, and helps to burn off calories.Additional information can be found at http://literateowl.wordpress.com/2011/08/31/cbc-ca-daybreak-south-three-kelowna-women-join-national-field-hockey-team/. Field Hockey players build up great stamina from playing these long, exhausting games.

Also, it provides great muscle building. Since there is a lot of cardio involved, the legs especially the calf muscles are greatly developed. Field Hockey players become great sprinters due to the extensive cardiovascular workout from playing the game. The endurance of the shoulder muscles and arms also increase due to holding and wielding the hockey stick.

Field Hockey also helps with reflexes. A lot of reaction skills occur from constantly hitting the puck while moving and seeing the other players on your team. This greatly helps hand to eye coordination.

Field hockey is a very tough sport, and can be one of the most competative team sports there are out on the field. For this reason, you must make sure that you know the ways to stay safe on the field, and injury free, as well as the way to avoid injuring another team mate, or opposing team player when out on the field of play. The most important factor to keeping safe on the field, is the correct protective gear, from head to toe. You are going to want to find the best helmets, mouth guards, padding, and off course, the best cleats to avoid an ankle or leg injury during play. If you do not have the best protective gear, you are bound to get injured, and potentially injure another player as well.

Another thing to remember is playing by the rules of the game. If you follow the rules, and the set boundaries, although it is always possible for a player to get hurt, if you make sure to play properly, you can greatly avoid a serious injury to yourself or another player. So, knowing the rules, and the right way to play the game, are also essentials to avoiding an injury.
